The holidays are just around the corner, and community members are invited to participate in a new program to help local families who may struggle during the upcoming holiday season.
The Steelville School District is hosting a Holiday Assistance Program to help provide students and families in need with Thanksgiving food and Christmas food and presents. This is the first year the district is implementing this program and it will be funded by donations from the community. The deadline to help with Thanksgiving baskets is November 2 and for Christmas is November 30.
School personnel note that some families served by the district do not have the means to cook a ham or a turkey and may even have different food allergies. Accordingly, those who wish to support the program may either provide a monetary donation (checks made payable to the Steelville Holiday Assistance Program) to have school staff do the shopping for them or can purchase the items to fill a basket on their own.
For those who wish to build their own basket, the following guidelines are beneficial for the program. Food baskets should only contain items that do not need to be refrigerated. Instead, send a gift certificate from a local business where the family can go to purchase the needed refrigerated items. Be specific and list the items you wish to be purchased with the certificate.
Suggested items for a food basket include: a small bag of potatoes or instant potatoes, gravy mix or gravy jar, canned fruit, marshmallows, brown sugar, canned vegetables (corn, green beans, potatoes, carrots, yams), cranberry sauce, stove top dressing, rolls or loaf of bread, cake mix and icing or pie filling, aluminum pan or foil for baking turkey/ham. School personnel suggest gift certificates for the following items: turkey/ham, butter, milk, fresh fruit/veggies, pies, cool whip topping, eggs, bacon, sausage, juice.
The Steelville School District is only a collector for this program. The school district does not offer financial aid to any of the families to provide them with holiday assistance.
